Doors

Updated: Sep 7, 2019

Erasmus+ has posted a call for photos on their Facebook profile to encourage teachers to upload pictures of doors they have captured during their mobilities. Although it has been more than a week now since I returned from Dublin, and I am still in the phase of processing what we learned there, as a final post I am happy to share some photos with you of some doors and gates I found interesting or eye-catching. Doors and gates symbolize both exits and entrances at the same time. We symbolically stepped out of the door of our course in Dublin, only to implement everything we learned there in our own teaching environments when we step back into our schools soon.

A tanfolyamot szervező Alpha College a North Great George's Street-en van, ami egy tipikus György-korabeli utca. Ez a klasszicista stílus 1714 és 1830 között, I., II., II. és IV. György királyok uralkodása alatt vált népszerűvé. A csaknem egyforma homlokzatú, négyszintes épületeket bizony nem könnyű megkülönböztetni egymástól -- ezért is olyan jellegzetesek a bejárati ajtók. A zöld ajtó mögött okosodtunk két héten keresztül.

Alpha College, the organizer of our course, is based in North Great George's Street, which is a typical Georgian street. This style became popular between 1714 and 1830, under the reign of Kings George I-IV. It is not easy to differenciate the four-storey buildings with almost identical facades, thus the entrance doors gained importance. We learned behind the green door for two weeks. The last picture shows the door of a house currently under reconstruction.

We were lucky to have the James Joyce Centre in the same street as the school. A speciality of the exhibition is the entrance door of the imaginary home of Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of the novel Ulysses. The actual door of 7 Eccles Street was carefully dismantled, and then put back together and displayed at the centre.

We also visited the Writers' Museum, which is located in another Georgian bulilding. In one of the rooms, I took photos of doors decorated with zodiac signs and interesting inscriptions at the bottom.

"Work is the great reality, Beauty is the great aim." (unknown)

"Day unto day uttereth speech and

Night unto night sheweth knowledge." (Psalm 19:2)

A másik pedig a Garda Memorial Garden bejárata a Dublin Castle kertjében, ahol azokra ír rendőrökre emlékeznek, akik szolgálatteljesítés közben vesztették életüket.

I captured the images of these stone doors in two very different locations. The first one I found at Airfield Estate, where we visited the biodynamic farm. The other one is the entrance to the Garda Memorial Garden in the gardens of Dublin Castle. Those Irish policemen are commemorated here who were killed in the line of duty.

The tower of the almost one thousand year old Gledalough monastery is special because its door is ca. 3.5 m from the ground. The reason for this is still a mystery, but it is commonly believed that this was a defensive practice against invaders. Welcome guests were let in by the monks using a rope ladder. Unfortunately, the church of the monastery is ruined, but its long gone early Gothic beauty still shows through.

Rural towns and villages welcome passers-by with beautiful entrances. There is even a guarding angel greeting visitors.

Két kedvencemet hagytam a végére: Howth kikötőjében találhatóak ezek a régi halfeldolgozó üzemek a rusztikusan vidám színűre festett kapuikkal.

I have left two of my favourites to the end: these old fish processing factories with their rustically colourful doors are located in Howth Harbour.

Viszontlátásra, Dublin! Good-bye, Dublin!
